Becoming a Proper Media Student

So…here it goes….the first Blog! Thought I should start doing one, being a Media Student and all that. Not too sure where to start or what to say exactly, but once I start rambling I usually don’t stop, but I’ll try not to make this one too tedious. Here we go then. I’m a first year Media Production Student in Lincoln; get all the Inbetweeners jokes out the way before carrying on…Done??

Last semester I delved a little bit into Photography, Digital Media and Scriptwriting. Although I enjoyed writing and directing a short film, I wasn’t and never have been too keen on Photography or Digital Media. To be honest, towards the end of the first semester I was beginning to wonder if I had made the right choice in choosing media, and was seriously thinking about changing course. But I knew that Radio and TV was coming up in the next semester, so I held on for a few weeks, and boy am I glad I did! TV has probably been one of the most enjoyable subjects this year. I am currently directing a programme called ‘Explore’, a children’s show about different countries, exploring food and involving a Blue Peter type demo. I have to say I have thoroughly enjoyed doing it. Even all the stress and hard work has not put me off enjoying myself and it is due to be filmed as live this Tuesday, so I’m sure I will be updating you on how that goes.

Also I’ve been working on a Radio show for the community Radio Station Siren 107.3fm, called The Summer Guide (follow on Twitter and Facebook), It’s the essential guide to the summer of 2011, with everything from what is going on over the summer, to great music, to top holiday destinations. I will be presenting the show along with a co-host Scott Banks. I was stupidly nervous when I decided to go for the role because I always thought I sounded strange when I heard my voice back, but I guess everyone does, and I had never really done something as big as this. I have presented links for my old schools sports day programme, and presented an awards show, but for some reason doing this seemed off the scale compared to what I had previously done. But I suppose that was one of the reasons I wanted to do it. I have taken a major role behind the cameras in TV and now I’m taking the leap forward into presenting.

So it’s all kicking off at Uni at the minute, 2 weeks till deadlines and about 4/5 weeks until I finish my first year of uni! Actually cannot believe how fast it has come and gone, I have made some amazing friends and experienced things I have always dreamed of doing.

So outside of uni I am trying to do as much as I can, when I get time that is. I did start a street dance class at the start of the year, but didn’t carry it on after the trials; looking back I should have done, after dancing for 16 years every week to do nothing really hit me with how much I miss it. So next year I will definitely be making more of an effort to start back up again. Also started swimming again recently, so keeping that up now, saying that though I did it once last week and have been too busy this week, but I am determined to carry on going and swimming my little socks off.

As well as this I often go back home to see the family and up to Leeds to see the boyfriend. It’s amazing how well our relationship has coped with uni, I know that some couples don’t survive it and drift apart, but I’d say it’s done the opposite and made us closer. So there you go, a little bit about me, hope it hasn’t been too boring or long, I’ll be posting soon bout more in the world of Bateson.
